June 2014 Movie Report

We’ve just finished the month of June which continued the summer of awesome. It was the month for sequels and sci-fi blockbusters and, some more than others, the month succeeded. So now it’s time for me to say what I thought were the best and worst films of the month and rate each of the films I’ve seen. I haven’t seen every movie released this month, but I’ll go back and edit once I do.

Best:

I’ve raved about it for a long time, I’ve seen it twice, and it’s still my favorite film of the summer. “Begin Again” is not just a great comedy about music, but it is a truly honest movie with a great emotional punch that feels tangible and real. The terrific performances by the ensemble cast and the soundtrack that I’ve been listening to ever since it was posted on Spotify are just a couple of the film’s many highlights. Definitely seek it out as it expands within the coming weeks.

Box Office: “Transformers” Made A Bunch Of Cash

The box office results are in and it looks like “Transformers” ain’t going away for a long, long, long, long, LONG time.

Paramount is suggesting that the “film” made $100 million over the 3 day weekend, but BoxOfficeMojo.Com suggests that “the actual number is around $98 million (or lower).” That would put it as the second highest opening weekend for the franchise behind “Revenge Of The Fallen,” ($108 million). Long story short, “Transformers” is here to stay no matter how bad this new movie was and chances are, Paramount’s getting the cash lined up for Michael Bay to return. Continue reading

Box Office: Sequels, Sequels, Sequels!

Box office results are in and Kevin Hart and the gang take the #1 spot in a photo-finish victory against the double punch of last weekend’s sequels.

“Think Like A Man Too” won the box office over the weekend with $29.2 million. This debut is lower than the original’s $33.6 million opening weekend back in 2012 and considerably lower than the $41.5 million opening of “Ride Along” from earlier this year. This is more in line with the debut of “About Last Night” ($25.6 million). Continue reading

Box Office: “22” Jumps To The Top, “Dragon” Takes #2

Box office results are in and Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are seeming to make for a better duo than Hiccup and Toothless at the box office.

“22 Jump Street” shocked the world by taking the #1 spot over the weekend with a whopping $57.1 million over the weekend. That’s over $20 million more than the debut of “21 Jump Street” two years ago and a little over $10 million under directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s last debut with “The Lego Movie.” This is a gigantic success for the franchise that will only get better from here considering the amazing word of mouth for the film. I myself saw it again over the weekend and loved it even more. Continue reading

rottentomatoes

This weekend in movies, Jonah Hill stars in two sequels, one with Dragons, one with Channing Tatum, and Robert Pattinson stars in a film alongside Guy Pearce.

“How to Train Your Dragon 2” – 91% CERTIFIED FRESH

“Exciting, emotionally resonant, and beautifully animated, ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ builds on its predecessor’s successes just the way a sequel should.”

“22 Jump Street” – 83% CERTIFIED FRESH

“Boasting even more of the bromantic chemistry between its stars — and even more of the goofy, good-natured humor that made its predecessor so much fun — ’22 Jump Street’ is the rare sequel that improves upon the original.”
