June 2014 Movie Report

We’ve just finished the month of June which continued the summer of awesome. It was the month for sequels and sci-fi blockbusters and, some more than others, the month succeeded. So now it’s time for me to say what I thought were the best and worst films of the month and rate each of the films I’ve seen. I haven’t seen every movie released this month, but I’ll go back and edit once I do.

Best:

I’ve raved about it for a long time, I’ve seen it twice, and it’s still my favorite film of the summer. “Begin Again” is not just a great comedy about music, but it is a truly honest movie with a great emotional punch that feels tangible and real. The terrific performances by the ensemble cast and the soundtrack that I’ve been listening to ever since it was posted on Spotify are just a couple of the film’s many highlights. Definitely seek it out as it expands within the coming weeks.

Box Office: “22” Jumps To The Top, “Dragon” Takes #2

Box office results are in and Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are seeming to make for a better duo than Hiccup and Toothless at the box office.

“22 Jump Street” shocked the world by taking the #1 spot over the weekend with a whopping $57.1 million over the weekend. That’s over $20 million more than the debut of “21 Jump Street” two years ago and a little over $10 million under directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s last debut with “The Lego Movie.” This is a gigantic success for the franchise that will only get better from here considering the amazing word of mouth for the film. I myself saw it again over the weekend and loved it even more. Continue reading

Box Office: “Fault” Sees “Stars,” “Edge” Falls Short

tfios

Box office results are in and Shailene Woodley adds another huge success to her resume while Tom Cruise takes a disappointing hit.

“The Fault In Our Stars” had a huge opening weekend debut with $48 million. It’s not quite as big as Divergent’s $54.6 million debut, but this is further proof that you should never underestimate a film based on a young adult novel. I still have yet to see the film, but based on what friends of mine have told me, I’m happy for it’s success. I might be seeing it sometime over the weekend due to an overload of screenings this week. Continue reading

Fresh V Rotten (June 6, 2014)

rottentomatoes

This weekend in movies, we have Tom Cruise dying over and over again, Shailene Woodley going through cancer, and Jenny Slate doing stand up comedy. It’s that time again to see what’s fresh and what’s rotten.

“Edge of Tomorrow” – 89% CERTIFIED FRESH

General Consensus: “Gripping, well-acted, funny, and clever, ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ offers entertaining proof that Tom Cruise is still more than capable of shouldering the weight of a blockbuster action thriller.”

“The Fault in Our Stars” – 79% CERTIFIED FRESH

General Consensus: “Wise, funny, and heartbreaking without resorting to exploitation, ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ does right by its bestselling source material.” Continue reading

June 2014 Movie Preview

Hey all!

So we’re in the midst of the summer movie season and it’s off to a great start. From big summer blockbusters like “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Godzilla” to small independent films like “Chef” and “The Double,” it’s been one of the most consistently great months of the year so far. Next up, we have June, where things are looking to get bigger and better. So I figured I’d take some time to look over the upcoming June releases and share my brief expectations on them all. Let’s get started!

June 6:

“Edge of Tomorrow” – Ever since I heard the premise, I’ve been excited about this movie. I’m a big Tom Cruise fan and the raving early reviews are definitely adding to my excitement.

“The Fault In Our Stars” – This movie could end up being the movie of the weekend at the box office. The fan base is absolutely huge. Me personally, I like the trailer, but I worry that the final product will turn out to be a sap-fest. Continue reading
