June 2014 Movie Report

We’ve just finished the month of June which continued the summer of awesome. It was the month for sequels and sci-fi blockbusters and, some more than others, the month succeeded. So now it’s time for me to say what I thought were the best and worst films of the month and rate each of the films I’ve seen. I haven’t seen every movie released this month, but I’ll go back and edit once I do.

Best:

I’ve raved about it for a long time, I’ve seen it twice, and it’s still my favorite film of the summer. “Begin Again” is not just a great comedy about music, but it is a truly honest movie with a great emotional punch that feels tangible and real. The terrific performances by the ensemble cast and the soundtrack that I’ve been listening to ever since it was posted on Spotify are just a couple of the film’s many highlights. Definitely seek it out as it expands within the coming weeks.

Box Office: “Transformers” Made A Bunch Of Cash

The box office results are in and it looks like “Transformers” ain’t going away for a long, long, long, long, LONG time.

Paramount is suggesting that the “film” made $100 million over the 3 day weekend, but BoxOfficeMojo.Com suggests that “the actual number is around $98 million (or lower).” That would put it as the second highest opening weekend for the franchise behind “Revenge Of The Fallen,” ($108 million). Long story short, “Transformers” is here to stay no matter how bad this new movie was and chances are, Paramount’s getting the cash lined up for Michael Bay to return. Continue reading

“Transformers” Recap

With the release of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” this weekend, I thought that I would recap my brief thoughts on the previous three films in the franchise. Now I won’t do full reviews on them but rather just a paragraph on each film explaining quickly what I think of them. So let’s just get right into it.

“Transformers” (2007)

Don’t get me wrong, this movie is really stupid. I mean REALLY STUPID. The comedy in the film almost never works, a lot of the acting is terrible, and it’s completely bloated with a near 2 and a half hour run time. With that being said, I still found this film to be a lot of fun. The visual effects are dazzling and the action is absolutely spectacular. To me, there was just enough action and visual spectacle for me to have a good time watching it . . . only just.

Overall grade: B

June 2014 Movie Preview

Hey all!

So we’re in the midst of the summer movie season and it’s off to a great start. From big summer blockbusters like “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Godzilla” to small independent films like “Chef” and “The Double,” it’s been one of the most consistently great months of the year so far. Next up, we have June, where things are looking to get bigger and better. So I figured I’d take some time to look over the upcoming June releases and share my brief expectations on them all. Let’s get started!

June 6:

“Edge of Tomorrow” – Ever since I heard the premise, I’ve been excited about this movie. I’m a big Tom Cruise fan and the raving early reviews are definitely adding to my excitement.

“The Fault In Our Stars” – This movie could end up being the movie of the weekend at the box office. The fan base is absolutely huge. Me personally, I like the trailer, but I worry that the final product will turn out to be a sap-fest. Continue reading
